About Me

I joined the Experience Life team back in May 2007, and in January took on the role of associate editor. My foray into healthy living began sometime shortly after I started working here (call it peer pressure). So I’m a relative newbie to the world of health and fitness, but I’ve been blogging in some form or another since seventh grade (ah, the days of angsty LiveJournal posts). Here are a few things that have changed since seventh grade:

  • As my main profile indicates, I graduated from Augustana College with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and religion. What I don’t list on my resume is that I was also an art major but, alas, never finished the degree. That just seemed like something an art major would do…
  • I no longer watch The X-Files with religious fervor (I was such a nerd). I’ve moved on to bigger and better things. Like Lost and 30 Rock, and Esther Williams synchronized-swimming musicals.
  • I’ve refined my palette a bit and acquired a taste for kombucha. Actually, it’s more of an addiction. I blame Laine for my problem. She’s totally an enabler.
  • I finally got those braces off.

Some things, though, haven’t changed at all:

  • I’m the exact same height I was in seventh grade. 5′11″ I’ve always been an Amazon, of sorts.
  • I still live in Minneapolis, though in a more “urban” neighborhood these days. You’ll usually find me doing one of three things: running around one of our 10,000 lakes, stimulating the economy at local bookstores or wandering around aimlessly with my camera in tow.
  • I have three fantastic siblings (two brothers and a sister), a set of very patient parents, a few grandparents, a couple dozen aunts and uncles, and a few million cousins (they keep multiplying). In fact, it’s safe to assume that we’re probably related.

I spend my days researching the latest trends in health, fitness and nutrition, writing and editing a few of the smaller departments in the magazine, and helping out with miscellaneous Web-related projects. When I’m not at work, I’m basically an EL evangelist — much to the delight of my family and friends, I’m sure. My brother’s wife (a registered dietitian) and I love to bore the family with riveting discussions on the latest in nutrition research, and my roommate and I are actively recruiting members to our new running club (clever name pending). But I like to keep my interest portfolio diversified, and spend a fair amount of time doing non-health-oriented activities: learning Hebrew, traveling, eating dangerous amounts of chocolate, and so on.
