I know I run faster when I have an audience, and I have one girlfriend that runs with us that runs even faster when someone is chasing her versus running beside her. And there's one more thing you forgot to add in with that "friendly competition" - the sense of pride you get when you "chick" some guy at the finish chute. Hee hee!
